Does a Society Get the Government it Deserves?

The short answer is no!  The old saw go that the people will do something about it if they are governed in a manner that they cannot tolerate.  They will vote, revolt, or do what it takes to change or replace their current government.  Throughout history, this has generally been true.  but there have always been some exceptions.

One obvious exception has been through the use of overwhelming power and control.  This has become a more prevalent exception as the technologies of power (weapons, etc.) have become more and more overwhelming.  A poor country under the thumb of a powerful dictator with modern weapons is a situation not easily changed by the people.

A less obvious exception to the rule, and one that I believe is a large part of the problem here in the US, is the control and manipulation of information.  The art of deception has been taken to new highs by the Conservative/Republican power structure.  Add to that two trends in information that have reached a critical point, and you have a people in the United States who will not revolt, or will revolt against the wrong enemy, because they believe things that are just not true.

The first trend is the increasing size and power, and the decreasing number, of places where Americans go to for their information.  The 2nd trend is the shrinking and ineffective “independent” or “free” press.  The control of the sources of information for the American People more and more moves into the hands of those in alignment with the Conservative/Republican power structure.  The very experts in deception have become more and more in control of the sources of information.

This is a very bad thing, and we are ending up with half the population of this society believing that the political Party which in reality creates the society we don’t want, is actually the Party that will give us the society we do want.  It is a sad situation when well-meaning people are angry and revolting against their own best interests, because they have been deceived

When all three major “News” networks run a video of a Republican lying that the Democrats are trying to push a huge, expensive health bill through the Congress using an obscure and unfair process called Reconciliation, and the news personalities do NOT point out the known and easily validated truth that health care HAS passed both houses and ONLY the small differences will go through Reconciliation (or at least immediately show a video of a democratic rebuttal of those lies), what do we expect the average American to believe?

Even for those Americans who turn to cable news, they had better stumble onto MSNBC, or at best, they will get the same from most cable news stations as they do from network television.  At worst they will go completely over to the Dark Side if they stumble upon Faux News.
